Plantar Warts

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts (verrucae pedis) are skin infections caused by the Human papilloma virus (HPV) and result in hard and often painful, thickened lesions on the sole of the foot.

These viruses are present everywhere and are spread easily, especially in moist environments. They enter the skin where the outer protective layer is broken, either by minor trauma or moisture.

They often make running, jumping, and even walking, uncomfortable because they press inwards on the sensitive nerves of the skin.

The Treatment

‘Over-the-counter’ preparations are generally an ineffective treatment and often cause warts to spread.

Treatment depends on the age and medical status of the patient as well as the location of the wart on the foot.

Treatment may either be more conservative, but sometimes surgery is the only option. Our skilled podiatrists will help you to make an informed decision.
