Corns and Calluses

Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against friction or pressure.

They may form from changes in gait patterns or ill-fitting shoes. They often form on the feet and toes. More prominent over bony areas on the toes.

Corns can also develop in between the toes as a result of compression from incorrect footwear.

The Treatment

If a corn or callus becomes very painful or inflamed, contact our highly experienced podiatrists.

Never try self-treat especially if you have diabetes. This is important because even a minor injury to your foot can lead to an infected wound.

Treatment of corns and calluses involves the debridement of the hard skin, and in the case of corns, removal of the nucleus (the centre part). Identifying the underlying cause or aggravating factors is of utmost importance.
